Question 7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product.

Continuity editing

In the preliminary task we filmed all our main shots on the same day. Our problem came when we ran out of time to film the first set of establishing and opening shots, we planned to film in our next lesson however our actor didn't have the same clothes on and due to the deadline approaching we did not have time to film them, this resulting in a limited sequence.

For our main task we filmed all our shots on the same day apart from one which was intentional. We gave ourselves enough time to film all our shots and when we were filming we decided to stop and film as we were going to each setting in the woods to ensure we had extra shots in the case we lost any or if any shots didn't turn out the way we hoped. The one shot we didn't film on the day was a close up of our unidentified character which needed to be filmed in the dark room at college to produce the best outcome with the help of our LED lights.

The use of camera

Vision editing

Construction of character and story

In the preliminary task I knew little about the cameras as I have not used them before, we did some practice in lessons about white balance and how to set up the camera. I found we kept to a limited amount of shot types and should have explored it further however the shots we did use were relevant to the storyline.

We kept to a simple and straightforward storyline for the preliminary task due to the limited planning time we had. We kept it to an intense conversation and left a mystery aspect to draw in an audience. Having this set up was easy to film and quick to accomplish.

For the preliminary task the vision editing was straight forward we could strongly keep to the shot list and produce a flowing sequence. However, due to poor time management we did not complete and record all our intended shots leaving our sequence shorter than expected. We did not need to put any effects on our shots in editing apart from simple fade transactions so that the cuts weren't as sharp.

As we had more time for the main task it enabled a stronger and more complex storyline. We came up with a main idea of an abduction thriller and it progressed from there when we constructed our characters. After the various tasks of analysis we were able to build two characters that fit the genre: An active innocent and the dark, mysterious pursuer. We looked in depth at the story synopsis and how the film would progress this gave us a full variety of filming choices and we were able to storyboard our opening. We did not do this in our preliminary task making our main task a strong development.

There was more vision editing needed in our main task due to the storyline, genre and overall look. We used the shot list as a guide rather than a literal list to follow, we filmed all our intended shots this was simply because when we put the film together in the literal list it didn't flow or look the way we wanted. We used transition blurs and fades that helped make the flashbacks more realistic and create the dizzy, unsettled view.

In the main task we took the opportunity to use the camera to the best of our abilities and decided to vary the shot types as much as we could. However, we tried not to over complicate the sequence and use too many which would have resulted in a unprofessional outcome.

Sound editing

The sound editing in the preliminary task is limited and straightforward as the non-diegetic sound it is only apparent at the beginning. The use of diegetic sound editing was weak as we only used the sound recorder on the camera rather than using a voice recorder, this is something that should have been considered and used.

In the main task the non diegetic sound didn't excel as much as I hoped. It wasn't what I pictured and proved that sound editing is harder than imagined. Even though we decided to have no dialogue in our sequence we still used a sound recorder to emphasize the diegetic sound we wanted in our sequence and I think it worked effectively.
