What Is XYY?

  • XYY is a genetic disorder that occurs in males
  • It causes them to have an extra Y chromosome
  • Instead of 46 chromosomes they are born with 47

What Causes XYY?

  • Most cases are due to an error during cell division in the father's sperm before reproduction occurs.
  • The error occurs during anaphase II of meiosis II

XYY Syndrome!

What Is XYY?(Cont.)

  • XYY syndrome is a mosaic, which means that some of the cells may have XYY chromosomes, while others may have the normal XY
  • XYY occurs in about one in every 1,000 births worldwide.
  • It can occur to any male an dis not limited to a certain people
  • It is not an inherited disease
  • Other names for XYY are Jacob's syndome, YY syndrome or 47,XYY syndome

Effects of XYY

  • The effects of XYY syndrome differ from adolescnce to adulthood. Here are the symptoms for each.

Adolescence

Young/Teenage Years

These are some symptoms that babies have if diagnosed with XYY:

  • Weak muscle tone
  • Delayed development of walking and crawling
  • Delayed or difficult speech
  • Not easily excitable
  • Undescended testicles

These are some symptoms of XYY that can occur during the teenage years:

  • autism diagnosis
  • inability to grow facial or body hair
  • attention difficulties
  • delayed ability to write
  • delayed or difficult speech
  • delayed or absent puberty
  • emotional or behavioral issues
  • enlarged breast tissue
  • muscle spasms
  • low testosterone levels
  • weak muscle tone
  • learning disabilities
  • small penis
  • undersized testicles
  • taller than average height
  • weak bones

Adulthood

These are some symptoms that adults have if diagnosed with XYY:

  • decreased sex drive
  • decreased sperm counts
  • infertility

What Did We Learn?

Is XYY Inherited?

  • While finding research for our project, we learned a lot about this disorder and what its about.
  • WHen we first started doing research, we thought that this disorder doesnt really affect its victim, but after digging deeper, we came to a conclusion that it has many different symptoms that can affect the daily lives of people carrying it.
  • XYY syndrome is not inherited.
  • It is a random event that occurs during cell division
  • It is neither dominant nor recessive
  • A person who has XYY cannot pass on the syndrome to his son.

Treatment

  • XYY cannot be cured
  • Some therapies to reduce the symptoms are testosterone replacement therapy, fertility therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy, and educational therapy
  • Testosterone replacement therapy helps teenage boys go through puberty, and helps older men improve their sex drive
  • Fertility treatment can improve the chances for the person to have a child.

Diagnosis

  • XXY may be undiscovered until a male reaches adulthood, unless you go to regular checkups
  • Two tests can be used to diagnose XYY syndrome:
  • Hormone testing
  • Chromosome analysis
