Stink bugs are a nuisance to gardens and farms, because they suck the juice out of fruits and vegetables. This causes farmers to throw away valuable fruits and vegetables. Not all stink bugs have a negative effect, some will eat harmful insects. They do not have a major effect on the areas native species.
Stink bugs got their names from the unpleasant odor they release when crushed. They are also called shielded bugs because of their body shield. Also, they have antennas with the ability to pick up scents.
Stink bugs are native to Eastern Asia, especially tropical parts of China. Stink bugs were introduced to eastern PA, but now spread across the entire state. They were accidentally introduced to PA in 1996, it is believed this happened by them hitching rides in packing crates.
