Environment

Growing up in a poverty-stricken and drug infested community, Author Wes's decisions were impacted by it. When he moved to the Bronx, “[he] was becoming too ‘rich’ for the kids from the neighborhood and too ‘poor’ for the kids at school. [he] had forgotten how to act naturally, thinking way too much in each situation and getting tangled in the contradictions between [his] two worlds.” The negativity in the community began to control Wes when he decided to let his grades fail, when he started hanging out with bad people, and basically becoming a gangster.

The Other Wes Moore's environment is the same as Author Wes's environment; drug infested and poverty-stricken. However, the Other Wes's decisions were mostly impacted by the environment. The easy access to drugs enabled him to make a living out of it. Throughout his life, he gave his whole life to drugs and he would do anything just to attain money from it. Once he went inside the drug game, he wasn't able to come out until someone helped him get out of it.

Federal Offenses

ARGUMENT

Author Wes had many friends throughout his life. However, his biggest eye-opener is Shea, a drug runner. When he decided to spray paint "KK" (Kid Kupid) on the wall, the police caught them. After being caught, Author Wes started to realize the importance of life. “I became aware of how I had put myself in this unimaginably dire situation – this man now had control of my body; even my own hands had become useless to me. More than that, he had control of my destiny – or at least my immediate fate. And I couldn’t deny that it was my own stupid fault. I didn’t have the energy for romantic rebellion – the possibility of losing all control of my life was like a depthless black chasm that had suddenly opened up in front of me.”

The Other Wes has, indeed, made many federal offenses. Starting from his childhood with the football incident, then the shooting incident, and finally the jewelry heist, he is known to be violent and fierce. However, his most memorable offense was when he and a group of people stole jewelry. Although he did that to provide for his family, he made the decision. That decision sentenced him to jail.

Other Wes

Author Wes

Both Wes Moores' lived in similar conditions. No father figure, bad environment...they had to decide what to do in order to become a man in such a broken world. Although family, friends, contributed to their decisions, only they, themselves, can make their fates come alive. They decide whether to be the leader or to be the follower. It's their decision to either make their lives better or worse.

Education/Discipline

When Author Wes was young, he didn't really care about his education. This was when he was in Riverdale County School where he decided to fail all of his classes on purpose. Once he was sent off to Valley Forge Military School, his confidence shined once more and he was able to change his life. Even though his mom sent him there, it was Author Wes's decision whether to follow or ignore. He decided to follow, therefore, becoming more successful and turned his life for the better.

After Other Wes found out about drugs, his education plummeted. So he dropped out of high school. However, when his friend led him to JobCorps, he was able to get back on track...for a while, until his old vices came back. His lack of knowledge impacted his decisions by blinding him from the consequences of his actions. He doesn't think before he does anything. During the basketball incident, he let his anger control himself rather than thinking twice about the consequences.
