Our Context

Well-being and the IB

‘An IB education is holistic in nature—it is concerned with the whole person. Along with cognitive development, IB programmes address students’ social, emotional and physical well-being.’

(IB, ‘What is an IB Education’, 2013)

Equipped to 'think well' and thrive in complexity with:

Academic tensions

At ISP, our students develop the necessary skills, habits of mind and the moral and ethical values to be able to understand, manage and thrive in the interconnectivity and complexity of the modern world.

ADAPTED FROM The Diploma Programme: From principles into practice (2009), p30

“How to reconcile the Diploma Programme which stresses academic rigour with the PYP and the MYP which are designed to accommodate all children?”

Well-being at ISP

But they need the skills to do this...

Taking control of thinking

A lens through which we see and interpret the world

The Tyranny of Perfection

  • Diversity, uncertainty and complexity are facts of life and we should value them - Open-minded, Risk-taker, Principled, Inquirer

  • Ability, personality and knowledge aren’t fixed - Knowledgeable, Open-minded

  • Learning takes time and effort, so trying hard is valued - Inquirer

  • Failures/problems are part of the learning process - Risk-taker, Open-minded

  • On-going honest self-reflection leading to increased self-awareness are vital to the process of learning - Reflective

  • How to improve is the most important thing - Thinker

  • Achieving balance between competing needs and priorities is an on-going process - Balanced

It helped me... "by distracting myself from trying to remember stuff for the exams which was probably stressing me out more than the actual exam."

(Grade 10 student)

A set of unquestioned beliefs, values and attitudes that we use when inferring meaning.

"It helped me a lot to calm down and to get out of the stressful state of mind that I was in. I think that it is incredible that ISP is trying this new method of helping the students. It's very exceptional in my opinion so thank you so much for always being creative and open minded!!" (Grade 10 student)

Process-Focused Feedback

Grit = perseverance and passion for long-term goals

"Time-management is a skill"

'Process information removes the "genius" from performance and replaces it with... the strategic knowledge of how the success was accomplished.' (Johnston, 2012)

How can we link current research on the 'language of thinking well' to IB principles to enhance learning and well-being, as well as support the development of internationally-minded students?

Balanced

"We understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives - intellectual, physical and emotional to achieve well-being for ourselves and others."

'Thinking well' = a way of thinking which is based on certain attitudes and values, and requires critical, reflective thinking skills.

This process is as empowering for teachers as it is for students.

"The major argument... underlying the powerful impacts in our schools relates to how we think! It is a set of mind frames that underpin our every action and decision in a school."

Hattie, Visible Learning for Teachers, 2012, p181
