Introduction

• Myotonia Congenita: delay in the ability to relax muscles after forceful contractions

• Occurs in a variety of animals.

• First documented in the 1880s

• Dr. H.H Mayberry began breeding them for meat.

• Easy to contain, and they had excellent meat quality

• There are two main strains of the goats found in Tennessee and Texas.

Genetics

• Myotonia is caused by an irregularity in the gene called the Chlorine Channel 1 (CLCN1), located on the seventh chromosome, position 35.

• This gene controls the proteins that allow for the flexing and relaxing of muscles.

• CLCN1 affects the negatively charged chloride ions, which signal for the muscles to relax, with an imbalance of these ions, the muscles remain stiff.

Genetics

• Crossing these goats with

other breeds causes the

heterozygous condition (carriers)

• Testing for Myotonia in goats is not common, rely on symptoms
