How does Setting influence

the Theme of the Text?

Setting influences the characters and our understanding of the characters

Because setting influences the plot and characters, it influences Theme

The time and place the story takes place affects the lessons that can be learned from the main character in their surroundings.

Reminder:

Theme is the main message the author is trying to give the reader.

The theme is shaped by the character, setting, and plot of the story.

Setting contributes to Plot

The setting can reflect the mood of the characters

So, how does the opening setting influence theme in "Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief"?

For example, if the setting of the story was set up like this: "It was a dark and stormy night and the rain came down in torrents," then the mood of the character would probably be gloomy and lonely.

Without setting, there would be no plot for the story to be held.

The setting enhances the story by folding the plot into a place and time that fits perfectly with what is going on; in fact, it is often the setting that makes the action possible.

The thunderclouds let us know that there is a storm coming, which reflects the danger and lets us know that trouble is coming.

The top of the Empire State Building and Zeus and Poseidon let us know that this a battle of "epic" proportions is about to happen. We understand that these two Gods (and therefore Percy, Poseidon's son) are main forces in the conflict and there will be supernatural influences affecting the main character's.

The city scenes reveal Percy as a young man who doesn't quite fit in -- leaving the reader with the sense that there is something unusual about him. His encounters with Chyron and the Minotaur set the scene for the rest of the story. Percy will face many challenges to survive and save his father and Zeus from going to war.

So, how is the theme influenced?

The journey to finding out who we truly are is often filled with obstancles that take courage to overcome.

Purpose for your small group work today: think about how the setting of your section of the movie adds to the conflict and reveals Percy's development towards becoming a Demi-God (superhero).

Or the setting could reflect the plot in representing something evil or unfortunate is about to happen.
