" The Censors"

By Luisa Valenzuela

Synopsis

Literary terms examples

In the beginning of the story, the main character Juan is trying to save himself and his beloved Mariana. He writes a letter to Mariana that may have some little hints/suspicion concerning causing harm to the well-being of the government that the (Censors) might screen. Juan then sets out to become a censor, and things get ironic

  • Irony - (pg 968) "When his letter reached his hands. Naturally, he censored it without regret" ..... Irony may give the reader a little laugh or two.
  • Point of View - (pg 966) "Juan knows there won't be a problem with the letter's contents".... it shows how the narrator is telling the story
  • Protagonist/Antagonist - (pg 966) "poor Juan! One day they caught him with his guard down" ..... these characters drive the story foward.
  • Setting - (pg966) "Mariana new address in Paris" .... give the reader a image of the scene
  • Conflict - (pg 966) "check its tiniest comma and most accidental stain" .... heart of the story, major part of the plot.

Recommendation

(pg 966) irreproachable- innocent

Ex: i was positive i only had irreproachable motives when i was going to talk to brittany.

(pg 966) sabotage- damage/destroy

Ex: Batman was out to sabotage the joker's evil plans.

(pg 966) staidness- soberness

Ex: My dad's staidness was in question when he came home from his friend's house.

The Censor was a peculiar story. It showed irony at its finest as Juan did the very thing he was out to stop in the beginning of the story because he was blinded by his dedication to the job he recently took.. (Censor). At first as I started to read, i was lost, but as the story picked up, it had gotten more and more interesting and ended up really catching my attention and i had sort of wished this short story was a bit longer so i had more to read.
