My research question:

How does the crab industry operate? What do they use in crab farming?

How are they farmed?

How does the crab industry operate?

The crab industry operates by using saltwater through canals that enters a number of ponds through a range of inlets; gravity feed pumps and variable speed pumps are also required to enable the saltwater to reach the ponds. The various ponds are used at different stages of the crabs life, one of the early stages is in the nursery. Depending on the temperature of the water and the feed levels, the crabs can reach market size in approximately 3 months in summer, with this time being much longer in the colder months. Once the crabs get to around 100g the stocking density has to be lowered to prevent cannibalism.

What do they use in crab farming?

To farm crabs it is necessary to have many facilities such as holding systems, sandy ponds with steep concrete banks, excellent sea water quality and many crab traps. Nursery ponds, settlement ponds and growout ponds are also required. The water also needs to be at a temperature of greater than 18 degrees for a good growth rate.

Blue Swimmer

How are they farmed?

Blue swimmer crabs are nursed in a nursery pond to begin with. The requirements to crab farm are nursery ponds, intake settlement ponds, growout ponds, and discharge settlement ponds. Most ponds have concrete lined walls so they cannot climb out, and also need to have sandy bases. They need to weigh between 60 and 100grams within 4 months. The survival rate needs to be 10% from first stocking to sale size, with an annual harvest of up to 100 tonnes.
