Audience

She wants parents to raise their kids to the standard that they are "imperfect and wired for struggle but [you] are worthy of love and belonging". Brown wants people to let themselves be seen as they really are, to love with their whole heart, and to believe that they are enough.

Brown's intended audience are people like herself, those who struggle with vulnerability of those who fear they aren't worthy of connection. She is also targeting the adults of this generation who are undergoing stress. For example, when she gives the idea that we numb vulnerability in order to deal with a doctors diagnosis, getting fired, firing people, ect.. She also says "we are the most addicted, in debt, obese, and medicated adult cohort in U.S. history" to further express her aim at adults.

Her claim is that without letting ourselves be vulnerable, we cannot be happy.

Brene is an author, public speaker, and is currently a research professor at the University of Houston

Graduate College of Social Work. She introduces herself by giving a short story about when she was asked to talk to identify herself as either a researcher or story teller when an event planner asked her to speak at an event. She then moves on to tell another story from her time as a young researcher in social work studies at school, how when something her professor said inspired her to take interest in researching the connections between people and what forms those connections.
