Fur Trade led to the exploration

of the country

Cartier trades with the Mi'Kmaq, they

traded furs and knives

The Aboriginal peoples were trading everything

for copper tools to pottery, before Europeans

discovered North America

The First settlers of what is now Canada relied on First Nations, for resources and trade to sustain living.

The Aboriginal poeple provided canoes

overflowing with furs

Treaties signed by First Nations

When the treaties were signed by Aboriginal peoples, they believed

they were agreeing to share the land. The government saw treaties as

a way to remove Aboriginal peoples from the land and resettle them

on reserves.

Indian Act; created in 1876. This act

made rules about the lives of Aboriginal

poeples without consulting them.At the

time, the government wanted to assimilate

Aboriginalpeople (Wanted them to give up

their language and traditions)

In 1970, Aboriginal people began to

fight for their rights. Aboriginal people

agreed to share their lands and resources

in peace.

Treaty 8; signed in 1899 by Aboriginal peoples

and the Queen of England. The purpose was the make

peace and friendship. The treaty was approximetly

840, 000 kilometers covering from parts of Nothern Albera, North Western Saskatchewan, North East B.C,

and the Southwest portion of the Northwest Territorries

Several players around the world played

hockey in Nova Scotia. A person named

Colonel Hockey stationed at the Garrison

in Fort Edward. Colonel used the game to

keep his troups in shape.

Ice hockey and field hockey was created

by First Nations, but there are many other

stories stating First Nations didnt.

They called the game Shinny.

Shinny is a combination of

street hockey and pond hockey.

Lacross

A festival was performed after

the game was over

The ball was either made from

wood or deer skin, and the stick

was a big wooden spoon with a net

at the end. The First Nations didnt

play with any equipment on.

Lacross was created by First Nations,

(Who called it Stick Ball) but

eventually modernized by European

immigrants. The First Nations game

was played for several days and could

be anywhere from 100-1000 players

(two different tribes would play eachother)

The field was was from one village to another,

and the net would range from 500 yardsto several

miles. The game could last for several days.

First Nations Relationship to Canads's Identity

The First Nations were the founders of Canada.

They explored the whole continent of North America

and down through South America.

The First Nations hunted Wooly Mammoths which provided

them with meat. They used the hides and bones to make

their tent, clothing and tools.

Christopher Columbus found North America in 1492,although

he thought he found India, forming the name "Indians"
