Meet Antonio, a 1st grader at Wilson Elementary!
Antonio actually shows fine motor skills of a 7 year old. He can draw people with heads, bodies, hands, hair, and clothes. (Fingers are something that I haven't seen in any of his work.)
Child Develeopment and Education states that "in a variety of cultures, physical attractiveness is correlated with self-esteem" (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2013).
Several docters from the National Institue of Health mentioned in an article called Characteristics Associated with Low Self-esteem among U.S. Adolescents that children with the lowest self esteem problems come from hispanic backgrounds affecting boys at large (McClure, Tanski, Kingsbury, Gerrard & Sargent, 2011).
1.) Antonio can write letters and numbers of similar size. Indicating capital letters from lowercase letters is a hard concept for him.
2.) He also knows and shows that he can hold his pencil like an adult when writing.
3.) Angel can also write both his first and last names fluently and effectively.
These doctors also stated that physical acticvity is a protective factor against low self esteem. This is something that many teachers at my school believe that my child does not get at home. At school Antonio seems to be very active but also shows signs of low self esteem such as the comment about being cute (McClure, Tanski, Kingsbury, Gerrard & Sargent, 2011).
Antonio has a much smaller build than the rest of his classmates. He seems to eat small amounts of food that are usually healthy at school during lunch. Antonio "knows" he is cute and physically atttractive and is always looking for attention. On Monday January17th, he made a comment after taking his assesment with his ESL teacher. He said, "I did well right? I know I did because im just so awesome and cute".
1.) Catch and throw balls with accuracy- I saw this being done correctly with P.E. time before school. Antonio and I were playing ball together.
2.) I see him dancing to the song of the day and keeping a beat with the music.
3.) I saw Antonio playing football with several other students and he could most defintely kick the football up to 6 meters away.

The authors McDevitt and Ormrod write "handwritting becomes smaller, smoother, and more consistant" through middle childhood. Looking back from Antonios past work, I can see the subtle changes throughout the year (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2013).
1.) I noticed that while playing football Anontio was not able to swerve while running to avoid collision.
2.) Also when throwing the balls together he had to use two hands instead of only one.
This is Antonio trying to decide if he should play tag as recess.
In conclusion, I know that Antonio is a smaller framed boy who has mastered both the gross and fine motor skills for 6 years old and even some fine motor skills for 7 years old. Sometimes he suprises me with what he can do and other times he suprises me with what he stuggles with such as capital letters.
5 doctors completed a study on the relationship between gross motor skills and physical development. In their article The Relationship Between Motor Proficiency and Physical Activity in Children, they stated that"Youth with better motor abilities may find it easier to be physically active and may be more likely to engage in physical activity compared with peers with poorer motor competence" (). Their results proved that children with higher levels of gross motor skills often participated in more physical activity (Wrotniak, Epstein, Dorn, Jones & Kondilis, 2006).
Antonio engages in physical activity but not as much as the rest of his classmates. This may be because he is in transition from 6 year old gross motor skills to 7 year old gross motor skills.
