Sharks and Cleaner Fish

The Relationship

- Both species participate in mutualism.

-Through mutualism they both recieve benefits:

- Cleaner fish recieve food

and protection from the shark.

- The shark gets algae and other organisms removed from its skin.

Sharks

Without Mutualism

- Sharks eat plankton, squid, and other fish.

- They are known for being one of the most agressive predators in the sea.

-Without this relationship, cleanerfish would survive by finding parasites elsewhere.

- Sharks would survive but have parasites and other organisms living on them.

The Cleaner Fish

Compare:

Tubeworms and Bacteria vs. Sharks and Cleanerfish

- Both organisms are a form of symbiosis called mutualism because they both depend on the other, but are not harmed.

-Cleaner fish are known for their main activity of cleaning the parasites and dead skin off of various types of fish.

-Cleaner fish participate in symbiosis (specifically mutualism) with many fish.

- The relationship between the sulfur oxidizing bacteria and the tubewoms living in the hydrothermal vents would be classified as mutualism.

- Both live on the black smoker chimneys.

-Tubeworms feed off of the bacteria, while bacteria gets to live in the tubeworms. Niether organism is harmed by this.

Wouldn't You Want a Friend?
