Romeo and Juliet

This scene starts with Paris talking to Friar Lawrence about his marriage to Juliet. Friar knowing Juliet`s relationship with Romeo, questions Paris if Juliet is aware of his wedding with Paris. Paris tells Friar, that Juliet is so sad and depressed because of Tybalt`s death; however, their marriage would let Juliet forget her loss.

Soon Juliet arrives to Friar Lawrence`s cell, with extreme urgency. She then finds Paris with Friar, and Paris starts talking to her as her wife. After Paris leaves Friar`s cell, Juliet threatens to kill herself with a dagger. Soon after, Friar comes up with a plan to keep Juliet and Romeo together.

Friar`s plan to re-unite Rome and Juliet.

After visiting Friar Lawrence, Juliet arrives home and announce to Capulet that she will marry Paris. Of course, Capuelt is very happy and proud of her daughter.

Juliet goes to her room, telling the nurse and her parents that she would take a nap; however, she will take the potion.

The act ends with some jokes between Peter, the nurse`s assistant and the musicians.

Literary Terms:

Changes in Characters

Juliet is a character that has changed

throughout the scene, because she is

desperate for being with Romeo.

She can`t wait to be with Romeo again,

and she even wants to kill herself.

Lady Capulet, demonstrated a radical change in this Act when Juliet died. In preview acts, we`ve seen that the relationship between Lady Capulet and Juliet isn't perfect. In fact, the nurse was like Juliet`s mother. Once Juliet died, Lady Capulet`s reaction was surprising, since she referred to Juliet as her life. Lady Capulet demonstrated that she truly loved Juliet.

"If in thy wisdom thou canst give no help,

Do thou but call my resolution wise

And with this knife I`ll help it presently."

"Take thou this vial, being then in bed,

And this distilling liquor drink thou off;

When presently through all thy veins shall run."

"There she lies, flower as she was,

Deflowered by him. Death is my son-in-law,

Death is my heir."
