Reading to Deepen Your Understanding

Read the article a second time - this time more slowly...

Think about what you are reading. How does the current point fit in with the previous points the author is making? How do these points all relate to what you know about the topic?

Try summarizing any confusing passages. Try reading out loud.

Sometimes you will have to read something several times in order to truly "get" it. Don't feel discouraged and don't give up!

Reading for the First Time

Use these strategies:

Focus on the Big Picture

Note Questions

Note Surprises, Frustrations, and Unmet Expectations

These tactics are called "annotating" and it is the best way to communicate with a text as you are reading it.

The Goals

Preparing to Read

Following Through

Previewing

Glance through the text to get an idea of what it is about. Read the title/headings. Look at pictures/diagrams. Read an abstract. Set expectations for what you think the text will be about.

Checking

Use the checklist of questions (pg 100) to understand where the author is coming from. Think about the context of where the article was published.

According to your textbook, the goals of critically and actively reading a text are:

*To formulate a position of your own

*To find allies and opponents to respond to

*To find important points of dispute

What you are NOT doing, is simply looking for any information at all, looking for quotes to fill up your paper, or simply finding information that everyone agrees on or that simply say what you want them to say.

Find a way to remember each text.

Write a short summary

State the thesis in your own words

Think about how the text relates to other texts

How?

Reading to Map Out the Argument

Critically reading a text requires that you read it multiple times -- this chapter will discuss some of those methods best suited to getting the most out of a source.

Annotate!

Create a "sketch" of the text

Complete a "reverse outline"
