Uso del Past continuous
Si usa per:
- per descrivere un'azione che era in corso di svolgimento in un momento del passato.
At one o'clock a.m. George was still studyng
All'una di notte George stava ancora studiando/studiava ancora.
While we were having breakfast, Sue was still sleeping.
Mentre facevamo/stavamo facendo colazione, Sue dormiva ancora/stava anca dormendo..
(due azioni di una certa durata possono essere entrambe in corso di svolgimento in un dato momento del passato)
- per descrivere un'azione che era in corso di svolgimento quando un certo evento del passato si è verificato.
I was having a bath when the phone rang.
Facevo/stavo facendo il bagno quando suonò il telefono.
Come si vede dagli esempi - Past continuous corrisponde all'imperfetto italiano.
in pratica, il past continuous deve essere usato in inglese ogni volta che l'imperfetto italiano può essere espresso nella sua forma progressiva.
Esempio
Last night your friend phoned at 10 pm but you didn’t answer because
you were reading.
Today he says to you “What were you doing last night at 10:00?
You reply “I was reading.”
Cosa facevi ieri sera alle 10.00?” o “Cosa stavi facendo ieri sera alle 10.00?” =
What were you doing last night at 10:00?
“Stavo leggendo.”
Il Past continuous è spesso usato in narrativa per descrivere una scena.
It was a mild summer night.
There was a full moon and a light breeze was blowing.
Edith was sitting on the terrace, (and was) sipping her tea.
Somebody was playing the violin in one othe houses nearby...
But then the music stoped, abruptly.
