The History of Polymers

vulcanization

combine natural rubber with sulfur and heat to 132 degrees Celsius

1839

Charles Goodyear discovers vulcanization. Vulcanized rubber is much more durable than its natural counterpart and so is commonly used in making tires.

The Beginning of Time

1907

Some polymers (e.g. tar and shellac) occur naturally and have then been processed by heat and pressure into useful things like hair and amber.

The first recorded synthetic plastic bakelite is formed serendipitously by Leo Bakeland.

The Mayans

British explorers discovered an ancient Mayan civilization who found one of the first application of polymers. They made balls for the children to play with using local rubber trees.

Bakelite

Bakelite has a high resistance to heat and is very hard, making it a useful electrical insulator
