What is Nature?

This side represents human nature, the characters on this side are generally impulse driven, unmannerly, and seem not to care for others who disagree with their desires. These characters are the source of the conflicts in the novel and are seen as animal-like, hard to control, and overpowering

What is Civilization?

This side represents manners and refinement. It is mostly a way for people to attempt to control human nature and restrict it from creating unwanted conflict

  • He is sympathetic towards his daughters safety and happiness
  • He represents civilization
  • He is the reason for Heathcliff’s emotional extremes

The continuous stress of the scenery within the text of Wuthering Heights provides the setting with symbolic significance. This scenery is comprised mainly of moors. Moorland cannot be civilized, and its consistency makes navigation difficult. The moors has waterlogged patches in which people can drown. Therefore, the moors symbolizes the wild threat posed by nature.

Heathcliff''s future behavior is a cause of his spoiled nature. Mr. Earnshaw spoiling him throughout his childhood left Heathcliff uncontent, always wanting more

Thrushcross Grange is known to be a very elegant and peaceful place and you can see all these characteristics in the entire Linton family, including Catherine after she'd moved into the Linton home

As explained before, Wuthering Heights is seen to be a home for animals and the people who live in W.H match this description perfectly, from the young and wild Cathy, too Joseph who constantly preaches and annoys the household

  • Wuthering Heights is a dark, evil place which makes everyone living in it revengeful towards each other. This was seen quite often with examples like Hindley wanting revenge on Heathcliff, Heathcliff wanting revenge on Hindley, Isabella wanting revenge on Heathcliff.

How do the characters affect the book

How do the settings affect the book

Catherine was often showed to be a very wild child throughout her childhood but when the Linton's brought her to their home to heal her foot and teach her to act like a women, all of the people and surroundings at T.G helped mold her into a perfect women

Social status is very crucial in the book. The Linton's are moderately strong in their aristocracy status but however they take great pains to verify this status through their actions. The Earnshaw's rest on much unstable ground socially. The flowing nature of social status is demonstrated mostly on Heathcliff’s course from homeless orphan to young gentleman by adoption to common laborer to gentleman again. Lockwood notes that Heathcliff is only a gentleman in “dress and manners.”

After Heathcliff returned to Wuthering Heights, he started teaching Hareton how to swear and other horrible things that led to Hareton becoming a rude, wild person

Hindley's anger towards Heathcliff was a direct cause of jealousy because he was jealous that his father loved and cared for Heathcliff more then him, leading to the many beatings and eventually gaining revenge on him by making him a worker after his fathers death

  • The horrible windy and bad weather throughout the Yorkshire Moors and especially around Wuthering Heights (that's where name of home came from, Wuthering for very windy) foreshadows the characters misery and depression

After Isabella moved into Wuthering Heights, she noticed the true Heathcliff in how he acted and became almost crazy from his constant cruelty to her, leading to her escaping for London

  • The moors are very peaceful. It helps the characters ignore problems within society (Wuthering Heights) and this can be seen within Catherine and Heathcliff. It improved Heathcliff's relationship with Catherine, while Hindley was trying to hinder it
