7 Unifying Themes of Biology

The Properties of Life

Reproduction

Metabolism

Cellular Structure and Function

  • Reproduction- the process by which organisms make more of their own kind from one generation to the next.
  • Since organisms do die, reproduction is a essential part of life.
  • Metabolism- is the sum of all the chemical reactions carried out in an organism.
  • Living organisms carry out many chemical reactions in order to get and use energy that is captured in sunlight.
  • Almost all of the energy used by an organism is captured from sunlight.

Homeostasis

  • All things are made up of one or more cells.
  • Cells- Cells are highly organized, tiny structures with thin coverings called membranes.
  • A cell is the smallest unit capable of all lifes functions.

Biology

  • All living organisms must maintain a stable internal environment in order to function properly.
  • The maintenance of stable internal conditions despite external conditions is called homeostasis.
  • An organism that cannot maintain internal body conditions would not survive.

Evolution

Interdependence

Heredity

  • The organisms in a biological environment live and interact with eachother as shown in the picture.
  • Ecology is the branch of biology that studies these interactions with eachother.
  • Change in the inherited characteristics of species over generations is called evolution.
  • A species is a group of genetically similar that can produce fertile offspring.
  • Natural selection is a term used by Charles Darwin that is for the process in which organisms with certian traits are more likely to survive then others.
  • Biology is the study of life and living organisms.
  • There are 7 properties of life.

- Cellular Organization

- Reproduction

- Metabolism

- Homeostasis

- Heredity

- Responsiveness

- Growth and development

  • Heredity is the passing on of characteristics from one generation to the next.
  • Heredity is the reason why offspring look similar to their parents.
  • Gene- this is the basic unit of heredity.
  • Sometimes damage causes the gene to change and this is called a mutation.
