Title your paper "Unit 3 and 4 Receptive Test."

You will watch me for the signs and write down the corresponding answer.

When we are done, you can use the rest of the time to work on your expressive presentation. It's DUE TOMORROW!!

Audience Etiquette:

All backpacks, pens, pencils, notebooks, etc. are PUT AWAY! They will not be on your desk.

Cell phones are not to be out.

You need to watch and respect the signer. It is considered rude to be doing something else while there is a presenter in the room.

Check your Google Drive account for all of your videos!!

Part 1

Answer my questions. Write in English. Answers may vary.

Part 2

I will sign an ASL sentence. You write the English sentence to match.

Part 3

Part 4

Extra Credit (+5 pts)

I am going to sign directions to a place on campus. Write down the name of the place.

Deaf Culture Day

Today you will get into groups of 3-4. Choose your groups appropriately, please.

On a sheet of colored paper, your group will come up with 10 facts about Deafness, ASL, Deaf Culture, etc. You will write them NEATLY on your paper and decorate it accordingly. Do not just write the facts and think you are done. This takes some CREATIVITY!!

I will be hanging these up in the room so make sure they are nice and neat!

Signing Naturally Unit 4

Telling Where You Live

One way that ASL is influenced by English is by using CERTAIN fingerspelled words.

Agenda

In general, fingerspelling is used when signing PROPER NOUNS!!

More on this in a minute...

Obj: SWBAT demonstrate an understanding of Deaf culture, the uses of American Sign Language, and the expressive qualities of ASL.

Deaf Festival - November 2, 2013 - 10:00am-6:00pm @ Comanche Park (here in SA)

CELL

PHONE!!!

After reading some of the facts, I realized they might be too difficult to sign. So, each group will come up and take turns SAYING each fact instead of signing them.

"Fingerspelled loan signs"

You're welcome.

I'm nice but I'm not dumb so, you are only allowed

to use ONE cell phone per group. Someone decide whose

phone to use. Everyone else needs to put theirs away.

If I see any other phones out, they will get taken up.

Please use this privilege appropriately, otherwise you will not

be allowed to do another fun activity like this with your

phones again.

These are two-to-five letter commonly used words that have their own pattern of movement.

Ex: #OK, #APT, #BUS, or #HS

Unit 4 Vocabulary

Remember that fingerspelling is not a substitute for signing. Do NOT spell a word as your first alternative for a sign you don't know.

Strategies

Last thing...

On the back of your poster, please write the

name of the websites you got the information from.

Instead, point, describe, act out, gesture, draw, etc... Anything but fingerspell!

Warm Up

1.) When you see a FS word, try to see the SHAPE and MOVEMENT PATTERN of the word rather than see each LETTER. Read the whole word as it is spelled. Try to keep your eyes on the signers face.

2.) When you fingerspell words, try to keep your hand to the right of your face and below your chin. Keep your elbow down and close to your body.

3.) Work on the flow of movement and blend of handshapes, rather than producing each letter. Avoid "bouncing" each letter.

You have 5 minutes to practice your presentation!!

(if you didn't present yesterday)

Answer

Spatial Referencing

Laurent Clerc

When identifying where something is located,

try to set up a reference point first. That way the

listener can better identify where the object is located.

1. Lon and Jane

2. Deaf - Man

3. Vista College

4. Walks - Rides her bicycle

5. Rode the bus

6. New York

7. She signs "New York" but her face shows confusion. She shakes

her head in confusion.

8. Woman - Standing up tall - Holding something in right hand

Wearing crown

9. He flew there.

Basketball Rules

  • 1. There will be two teams.
  • 2. Everyone will write down a question from the next slide. Make sure to write clearly!
  • 3. Crumble your piece of paper up into a tight ball.
  • 4. Each team will line up in a single file line on either side of the "basket."
  • 5. The first person in each line will shoot their basket.
  • 6. If you miss the basket, you have to answer the question that is on your paper. You can discuss with your team!
  • 7. If you make the basket, the next person in line on the OTHER team has to answer the question, but they do not get the point.
  • 8. We will rotate through everyone so you get a chance to play.

Keeping Score...

For each basket that you make, your team will earn 1 point.

If you miss a basket, you get no points; HOWEVER, you can earn a point if you get the answer right.

If you get the answer wrong, the other team CAN steal the question and earn the point.

Talking rules

You can talk QUIETLY to discuss your answers with your teammates.

If the question involves signing, you must have your voice off and sign only!

Even though names are a Proper Noun, if you know a person's name sign, use that instead. Only fingerspell the name if you don't know their name sign.

This also applies to cities and states. Many have their own sign but not EVERYONE knows it. So, just fingerspell it, since they are also proper nouns.

Questions???

Questions:

I will tell you which one to copy.

If we aren't mature enough to play this game correctly, we will stop. Please behave and respect each other.

EVERYONE needs to participate in answering questions. Help your team out!!
