Mars was formed as small objects in the solar system began to clump together.This took about 100,000 years.Mars grew, and the force of gravity pulled in more objects.The heat caused by the impact of these objects eventually created the different layers of the planet.Mars was formed 4.56 billion years ago.

The red color we see in images of Mars is the result iron rusting.Rocks and soil on the surface of Mars contained a dust composed mostly of iron and small amounts of other elements such as chlorine and sulhpur.The rocks soil were eroded by wind and the dust was blown across the surface by ancient volcanoes.
