Tragic Character :::: Creon

Conclusion

Why is Creon a Tragic Hero?

Creon is a tragic because he......

  • neither good nor completely bad
  • has a tragic flaw
  • had a downfall at the end of Antigone
  • is of royal birth
  • recognized his the mistakes he did to Antigone and Polyneicies

Arrogance, foolhardiness or stubbornness may be seen as Creon's tragic flaw in issuing an illegal royal edict

Throughout Antigone many of the lines said by Creon and about Creon lead you to believe that he is the tragic hero of the play.

It is our opinion that Creon is the tragic hero in Antigone, because his character follows the elements of tragedy, the content of the play sets him up as the hero. Creon has numerous traits and actions that prove him to be the tragic hero. Though it is not always obvious exactly who the tragic hero is, if you look closely enough, you can usually discover who holds the role. In the case of Antigone, Creon is definitely the tragic hero of the play.

****(Evidence)****

  • Creon delivers the command that "Polyneices...is to have no burial: no man is to touch him or say the least prayer for him; he shall lie on the plain, unburied"( Scene 1. Line 29.) When Creon states this command he is in turn defying the ancient law of the Gods
  • Creon 's ego prevents him from listening to any advice given to him. He states "My voice is the one voice giving orders in this city". Creon is not willing to listen to anybody, because he believes that going back on a decision will somehow destroy his pride. In an intense discussion with the prophet Teiresias, he warns Creon "a good man yields when he knows his course is wrong. The only crime is pride"( Scene 5. Line 35).

What is a Tragic Hero?

****(Evidence Cont....)****

A tragic hero is defined in most cases as a literary character of great stature whose moral defect leads to tragedy but some self-awareness brings the character to make the right decision .

A tragic flaw is a fundamental characters weakness, such as excessive pride, ambition or jealousy.

A tragic hero is a character who:

  • is neither good nor bad but has good intentions
  • is of royal birth or holds a high place in society
  • possesses a tragic flaw
  • has a downfall because of the tragic flaw
  • recognizes his/her own error and accepts the consequences
  • In line 138 of the exodus, Creon says, "Fate has brought all my pride to a thought of dust." This shows that in the end, Creon realizes that his pride helped bring about the chain of events that led to his fall.
  • In line 142 of the exodus, the Choragos says, "Proud men in old age learn to be wise." This also illustrates the fact that Creon 's pride led to his demise.
  • In the exodus, lines 7 and 10, the messenger says, "Creon was happy once...And now it has all gone from him!" This shows that everything was going well for Creon, but in the end all was lost. All of these lines show that Creon is the tragic hero.
