Regurgitation of the Pellet

A Tour of An Owl's Digestive System!

Before the owl can eat another meal, it must get rid of the pellet in

its body or regurgitate the pellet. The pellet travels back up the owl and is ejected from the owl.

3. Digestion

After the owl swallows the prey, it travels down the esophagus.

Then it goes into the gizzard.

In the gizzard, the meal is separated into two parts - digestible and those that are not. Non digestible materials includes bones, furs, feathers, and seeds. Material that is not digestible is formed into a rounded pellet.

Crocodiles, cockroaches, fish and other birds have gizzards. ( Many times, animals without teeth)

Off to Digestion!

2. Swallowing the Prey

Owls don't have teeth, so they must swallow their prey whole.

Think! After the owl swallows, where do you think the food would go next?

1, Owl Catches Prey

Owls are carnivores. They eat a wide variety of animals such as birds, rabbits, mice and insects.

  • You Do!! Can You Think of another example of a carnivore?
