World's Largest Multinational State: Russia

Multinational States:

Drawbacks of Nation-States:

Russia identifies 21 national republics, but the number may be as high as 170 ethnicities.

Overall, 20 percent of the country's population is considered to be Non-Russia.

Self-Determination:

A Multinational State contains two or more ethnic groups with traditions of self-determination.

Ideal Situation: All groups work together for their common benefit. Ethnic groups bring diversity and this diversity shapes the state with rich culture.

Issue: Often one ethnic group tries to overpower the other(s) to forward their agenda of vision of the state. Discrimination, segregation, ethnic cleansing and even genocide may result.

Homogeneous groups often lack diversity, thus problems may not be examined from perspectives or with beliefs that although different may be beneficial.

Germany Building a Nation-State (WWII)

What are the benefits of

Nation-States?

Many ethnic groups hold strong desires for self-determination or the right to govern themselves in a sovereign state.

Examples:

Northern Ireland, Kosovo & Palestine

Under the Nazi Regime of Hitler Germany believed that the could restore the German Empire by placing all people with German ethnicity under the same rule.

After the Treaty of Versailles (WWI) Germany had lost land in Czechoslovakia and Austria.

There Germans felt that the people in these regions were more German than Czechoslovakian or Austrian, so the would support being annexed back into Germany.

Ethnic Harmony

-Homogeneous groups tend to have the same belief systems, thus making decisions, laws and ideas would be generally accepted by the majority.

City-States vs. Nation-States

Greece adopted the practice of city-states in ancient history.

Greek regions operated as independent "states" with their own governments and economies.

Although all of the city-states were made up of Greeks they differed in their beliefs and structures.

Examples:

Sparta vs. Athens

What is a Nation-State?

A nation-state is a state whose territory corresponds with land occupied by a particular ethnicity that has been transformed into a nationality.
