Conservation

Reflections

I'm really glad that I reached out to the youth cause they are the ones that education on conservation had the biggest impact

I wish i gave them more time to color because looking through the pictures was the best part of this for me

Conservation will always be something that I feel passionately about and I'm glad I had a chance to share that with those fifth graders.

Emma Burke

Connections to Government

Most of the funding for conservation efforts comes from the government and money raised through fish and wildlife licenses.

(Fun Fact: Hunting Saves animals.)

Some of the things they taught ME

Replant

They're CREATIVE

"When people cut down trees I can plant new one !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" -Blair

"Recycle and don't throw away. Plastic and paper are recyclable. Landfills are filling up too much"

"I will Build a running robotic bear that runs when it sees trash and picks it up. " - Jessica

What we do affects wildlife

THIS IMPACTS OUR COMMUNITY

"I made an animal suffocating by the soda can holders. Please cut them before throwing them" -Graysen

"Keep the environment clean so animals can have a safe home" -Nayome

"when we recycle bottles and plastic bags it won't hurt out ocean life and the animals that are living in it" -Abigail

What I Did

Thank you!

After doing research on different ways that the northwest is taking steps to help its environment I took some of the simpler ideas and presented them to 3 fifth grade classes and after the presentations had them tell me what they thought they could do to help conservation

FOCUSES: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The Impact your actions have on wildlife. The time it takes for plastic to biodegrade. Replanting.

Identifying the root of the problem

When it comes to conservation the best course of action is to start by spreading awareness.

By educating youth about the impact they have on the world around them and what they can do to make it a better place in a fun way you ensure a environmentally conscientious generation.

FUN FACTS:

-Two Eco-bridges are going up this year in Washington

-The Cascade Wolf populations are coming off the endangered animals list!

-Gil net fishing is being made illegal all over the country and more recently in Oregon (yay)

NOT SO FUN FACTS:

-10+ animals have gone extinct in the last decade (including the black rhino)

-100,000 marine animals die a year from plastic entanglement

-there is 46,000 pieces of plastic for every while of ocean

-Average American uses 500 grocery bags a year (Family uses 1500)

-It takes 450 years for a plastic bottle to biodegrade

Why it matters to ME

I'm a lover of cute animals, hiking, and enjoying all that nature has to offer

I'm also an Out Door School counselor and I spend 2 weeks of my year out in the woods teaching kids about nature and what they can do to life harmoniously with it.
