What is the Halcyon Myth anyway?
By: Kirstin Phillips, Nicolle Startling
Today the European Kingfisher has become the bird we know as the Halcyon bird of Greek legend.
The gods took pity on both Alcyone and Ceyx and decided to turn them into halcyon birds.
Their suffering did not end. Even after they were turned to birds their lives were miserable. Alcyone was made to only lay eggs in winter and due to the storms of winter they were always destroyed.
After begging and pleading with Zeus he finally agreed to give her 14 days of good weather during the middle of winter. She then could lay her eggs in safekeeping.
These calm and peaceful days of winter are known as "Halcyon Days".

Alcyone was consumed with grief and felt she could not live any longer. She didn't want to live without Ceyx so she threw herself in the sea.
Soon after the tragedy Alcyone was visited by the god of dreams, Morpheus. He appeared as a ghostly figure of Ceyx and told her about how he had drowned at sea.
They lived happily in Trachis. They would playfully call one another "Zeus and Hera". Often times the gods would listen in on the two of them. It angered the gods to hear them calling themselves this. Ceyx needed to consult the oracle Apollo and traveled by sea to see him. While at sea Zeus threw a thunderbolt at this ship and he drowned during the bad storm.
It is a story about true love between Alcyone and Ceyx. Their love was so strong for each other it was known the world over. Alcyone was the daughter of Aeolus, the ruler of the winds and Ceyx was the son of Eosphorus, the Morning Star.
