The chairs were arranged in a circle shape, which promoted an open atmosphere for the families to connect.
The main agenda of the meeting was to address the concerns that parents/other family members have in management of behavior at home and how to effectively communicate with children when in crisis. This meeting was mainly populated with families with children ages 13-16. Many of the questions that parents had was how to keep the students motivated when they are having an "episode" or crisis. A few said that at some points, they feel powerless in helping.

My mother works for the UCESC and shares a building with the Lamberts Mill School. She introduced me to the principal and I then got involved.
I attended this meeting with all the therapists hired at the school, the clinical director, and ten families. Each of the families had at least one parent present. All of them expressed similar concerns about behavior management. Some of the scenarios were fairly intense and hard to imagine to have to confront every day as a parent. It was very interesting to see them connect on similar issues and even provide advice for one another outside of therapist advice.

Overall, I was very impressed with the success of the support group. One of the therapists mentioned to me that at first, only one or two families would show up to the meetings. But as word of mouth traveled, more families began to utilize the program. Everyone was very open and vocal about the issues and insecurities that they face as parents. It is extremely difficult to admit struggles as parents, and I admire the strength that they exhibited in this group. It inspired me to be involved in a support group regarding my diabetes. I feel as if it can really help me feel strong in the way this group made the parents feel stronger.

Support Groups meet on a quarterly basis on Wednesday nights at 6:30 P.M at the Lambert Mills School. However, families are also encouraged to utilize the family therapist (upon request), as well as keeping in regular contact with therapist assigned to the student.
