Football is one of the most popular sports around the world, at foundation level players will start playing it in a P.E. lesson at school or it could be one of the first times they attend an after school club where they will start learning and applying basic skills and rules.
After a child has the taste for football they may want to further their playing time by joining a casual Sunday/Saturday league team. There are many different age ranges for participation level football e.g. u7’s all the way through to u16’s.
After these initial age ranges a player may wish to progress onto playing for a mens’ football team these teams have know age range after 16+ so are very popular for those who are not quite good enough to progress any further/aren’t as committed to football anymore.
There are two aspects to performance level in football, the lower end of this level is playing for a local county/town such as Taunton Town and the other side of this level would be playing at the lower end of professional football such as a team in the blue square premier league up through to a team playing as high as mid table in the championship.
Finally Elite level in football is performing at a higher professional level basically these are the teams in the top end of the championship and the premier league. Playing at elite level may also be known as 'excellence' within sport.
Through premier league football many campaigns have been set up including 'show racism the red card' this campaign is well publicized weekly through premiere league matches which are shown on TV to millions of viewers. This is good because it helps show that racism is bad and helps give out a message to the young people watching, this helps cross cut agendas and relates a big issue into something that many people will watch.
football helps with an anti-drug environment for many youngsters as many training sessions for 13-18 year olds' run at the same time in the evening that it is debated that children start to go out on the streets and experience drugs for the first times, by getting children involved in training, tournaments and matches in the evening and at the weekend it helps children/teens get out of a situation where they may take drugs/ gets them into a different environment away from drug users.
Similar to that of football the foundation stage of rugby is all about getting people involved. this is the level for players that have usually never participated before. This stage is usually for children and gets them participating in after school clubs as well as PE lessons. The purpose of getting players involved early is to help them progress through each participation level as quickly as possible and hopefully therefore be set up for a career in sport either participating as an athlete or training as a coach, physio etc.
The participation level of rugby would be playing in local teams in younger years/playing competitively in a school/college team for example playing for Taunton town U'14,15,16s a school team or a college 1,2,3 XI squad.
At performance level in rugby at the lower end you will expect to see players partaking in local county and regional teams which can then progress to the higher level of performance level in rugby which would be the lower end of teams playing in rugby union/rugby league.
Elite level rugby is only for some players from each higher end teams around the world, these are the players that make up national teams for their sport in both rugby union and league.
In hockey the other foundation stage would be similar to that of other sports and is all about getting children involve at a young age, such as primary school.
it is important to get children involved in sport early in school as it promotes both pro-health way of living and pro education as it shows that living a healthy lifestyle is a positive thing for staying fit and active and promotes education as it goes alongside getting involved in school/college teams at the same time as getting qualifications and grades to set students up for colleges/apprenticeships/uni courses which help people with further careers.
The participation level of hockey is where individuals start to participate regularly to hockey training sessions either within school or by joining a local team. It is key to try and attempt to make hockey appealing for both sexes as people stereotype it as being a female centered sport, but it is important to reach out to a wider target group so that more people can be exposed to a new sport that they might not know they are good at!
To be at the performance level in hockey layers would be expected to play at county level consistently, and to be in this sort of squad a player would have to attend trials after being nominated by school or local team coaches.
Only a minute majority of the population are able to make it to sporting excellence within their sport, this is the top of the sports performance pyramid and is also known as the 'elite' level. In hockey players who make this level will be taking part in international competitions and because of this governing bodies within the sport are responsible for the development as players progress through county to regional and then the final step; national squads. To progress to this level in hockey a player would usually have to be scouted to attend national trials where the performance is viewed and is taken into consideration for the team e.g. a player can be good but needs to fit it and co-operate well in the team.
