French Theatre adopted the Proscenium stage, which was supported by Cardinal Richelieu, Louix XIII’s Prime Minister.

French Theatre used many ideas from Italian Theatre.

Influential Ancient Writers

Commedia dell'arte - A form of theatre that began in Italy in the 15th century and was carried over to France. This form of theatre often used masks, improvization, and was performed by traveling groups of actors. The female roles were played by women, unlike in Greek theatre where all parts were played by men.

  • Seneca - Wrote 12 philosophical essays, 124 letters dealing with moral issues, 9 tragedies, and a satire.
  • Euripides - Wrote 92 to 95 Tragedies.
  • Aristophanes - Wrote 30 Comedies and was known as the Father of Comedy.

16th Century French Theatre

  • Most French theatre during the 16th century was tied to its medieval heritage of mystery and morality plays.
  • The humanist movement and the access to ancient writers such as Seneca, Euripides, and Aristophanes enabled French theatre to progress.

In 16th to 17th century France, development of theatre was interrupted by civil war and other issues. In the mid 1600s, some stability returned and theatre progressed.

Neoclassicism

  • Neoclassicism was a movement involving all forms of art: theatre, literature, and architecture.
  • Artists looked to Classic Greek and Roman models as examples.
  • Neoclassical theatre portrayed a strict faithfulness to the unity of time, place, and action and also placed importance on respectability and “true to life” playwriting

The Humanist Movement

The Humanist Movement, or Renaissance Movement, was a movement which originated in the 13th century, and dominated European mindset during the Renaissance. At the center of Renaissance Humanism was using the study of classical texts such as Greek and Roman to change contemporary thinking, breaking with the medieval mindsets and creating a new style.
