National Drama: Responding to Stimulus

An example stimulus

Resp0nding to a stimulus

A stimulus is a starting point for the drama. It's what gives you the ideas for the plot, characters, structure ... but most importantly .... THE DRAMATIC PURPOSE.

Step one: Brainstorming

Step 3: Developing my own ideas

Step 2: Individual responses

You will use a copy of your group brainstorming to create 2 ideas of your own. In order to do this you must:

- pick one stimulus that interests YOU.

- Create an ideas board of RESEARCH to get the 'creative juices flowing'

Based on my research my first idea will have the dramatic purpose of:

Exploring the theme and issue of labelling people in High School.

Scenario;

Scene 1: A high school in dundee, break-time.

An 'emo' is walking through the cafeteria and a bunch of girls start shouting abuse at her and throw things at her. One of the girls doesn't join in an looks disapproving. The emo joins her her friend and they plot revenge.

Scene 2: The next day in the high school, in the girls toilets.

The emo's single out one of the girls for revenge, but they single out the girl who didn't go anything wrong and disapproved. They corner her in the bathroom, beat her up and flush her head in the toilet. They beat her up badly enough to need to go to hospital ... it just got out of control.

Seene 3: At trial, 3 months later.

It turns out that the victim's older sister who is at uni, is an emo. And the sisters had no provlem with being different from each other. The emo's targeted an innocent person, just because of their need for revenge. They are sent to juvie and the judge gives a monologoe about how the cycle of hate and discrimination makes criminals of everyone, even the initial victims.

Form: I would make this an improvised play to have lots of dialogue to develop characters and give the actors a chance to experiment witht the themes and issues.
