Certainly, at the beginning of the novel, Booth was confident, cool, and assured of success. He was well dressed, well groomed, and handsome. In Chapter 9, the very opposite is true of Booth's appearance and demeanor (attitude). He's lost much of his well groomed appearance due to the necessity of running from the Law and hiding in the woods.
Everyone has their breaking point, for sure. Some can and do hold onto their ideals even though their involvement will probably end in their arrest or worse. Jones certainly has much to lose by helping Booth and Herold.
Booth isn't viewing the situation from any other perspective other than his own and that of his conspirators. He seems to believe that the small group with whom he's surrounded himself represents the majority. Therefore, he's quite shocked to see that the media is expressing an opinion of his acts far differently than he expected.

Since Booth has a fairly easy task and he was well prepared and organized for it, he couldn't imagine someone else having any difficulty pulling off a similar task.
Booth's reasoning for rewriting a letter explaining his deeds was mainly to "clear his name" and fix his reputation. The first letter was burned by the actor he entrusted with it. That actor didn't want any involvement at all in the assassination.
John Surratt probably felt very afraid he was going to be arrested, tried and hanged for attacking Seward, even though he had very little to do with anything in Booth's second plan.
Some very reputable historical books say that the phrase "Hello, my name is Mud(d)" may have originated from the Lincoln assassination story. Others say the phrase was coined (written down or spoken/created) before that (in 1823). The phrase is supposed to mean the person's reputation is ruined or "dirty" like mud. In fact, there's even a Looney Tunes cartoon featuring this phrase! This cartoon was produced in 1952, so it could have taken its meaning from either the Lincoln assassination or from the phrase that was often used in the early 1800s!
White is the traditional color of goodness and purity. Black almost always represents sadness, depression, formality or evil. By using white horses to pull Lincoln's carriage and black cloth banners on the homes on the route, it is symbolic of goodness conquering evil.

Many people don't have an automatic cover story, especially when they first wake up. Perhaps George just wanted to get all of it off his chest, so to speak.
Many people can certainly agree that when we are in a hurry, we often forget things or we let small details slip. It's possible Jones may be a bit careless than usual because he's in a hurry.
Being unfamiliar with any equipment or procedure puts anyone at a disadvantage.
If caught with a huge sum of money, Jones would be suspicious and the target of unwanted attention from the Law.
There's a sense of suspense and fear. There's mystery in images that are dark and poorly lit.
Doing nothing worked for them in the past. Perhaps they assumed it would work again.
