  • cultural exchange between China and the West
  • Buddhism introduced into Yutian
  • Buddhist monuments were discovered in numerous cities along the silk road

What was traded?

  • mostly silk but did trade other things like bowls, glasses, dishes, and snow-white vases with graceful patterns
  • also string beans, onions, cucumbers, carrots, pomegranates, figs, and etc
  • blankets, rugs, carpets, various woolen goods
  • spices, fragrances, jewels, ivory(elephant tusks), sugar, european pictures and luxury goods

History

  • from second century BC to the end of the fourteenth century AD
  • silk was the major product which traveled on this road
  • 1,600 of being used during the Dynasty
  • length: 4,000 miles

Route

  • divides into three- Southern, Central, and Northern
  • spread all over the region and extend as far as Pakistan
  • not a road; a trade route
  • starts in Chang'an (now Xian)
