Middle Child Syndrome

Birth Order

Sibling Rivalry

Research says that middle children feel left out and invisible when being compared to their siblings. The oldest child gets to have all of the "firsts" while the baby of the family is always spoiled and gets what they want. Middle children often feel like they can never have anything to themselves because they always have to share with the other siblings.

Being a middle child has a lot of fighting involved. One thing most parents have learned is to never take sides or else the conflicts will get worse. Staying as uninvolved as possible will reduce the fighting.

Now that my brother has moved out of the house, my responsibilities have changed. Middle child syndrome is actually a bigger thing than most people think and affects middle children in so many ways. There is so much more to this syndrome than the birth order, their characteristics, sibling rivalry, and their personalities.

I'm the middle child of a 20 year old brother and a 6 year old sister. Things such as the birth order, characteristics, sibling rivalry, and change of personalities are effects of middle child syndrome.

Middle children are more outgoing and flexible than their other siblings. Studies show that middle children learn at an early age to be more vocal so they could be heard by their parents to get attention and get noticed. The middle children grow up with a mindset of having to follow their older siblings footsteps to succeed.

Having a low self esteem, feeling jealousy, empty, or introverted are some of the common characteristics a middle child can have.
