The first animals made their way to land for a couple of reasons. There was no competition for food and no predators.

Some possible reasons for evolving back into water would be hunger and safety from predators. These animals made their way back into water about 40 million years ago.

A possible theory states that the water animals slowly evolved into amphibians and then into pure land animals

Evolution from water

to land and land

back to water

Another theory states that some species of fish made short land excursions and the ones who could stay the longest passed their genes on. Over time, fish could slowly move onto land

Researchers believe the first four legged animals made their way onto land over 365 million years ago.

It was then beneficial for some species to move back into the oceans. In order to go back into water, the animals would lose their legs and vital systems that are essential for land life.

This was one of the first whales. They had long skulls and large carnivorous teeth.

Scientists found

ancient wolves

that resembled

the first whales

as seen here.

It was beneficial for some species of ocean animals to move onto land. Evolution had to occur at a large level for this too happen. It had to happen again when the land animals made their way back to water.
