Elements of Romanticism

By: Wendy Lin, Sally Chen, and Kristen Woo (Period 1)

Examples from text (cont.)

_____________________________

Examples from "The Raven" by Edgar Alan Poe

Example 4: "But with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door. "

Element: Appreciation of nature

Why: The narrator emphasizes the royalty of the raven by saying it has a mien of a lord or lady.

Example 5: "Perched upon a bust of Pallas, just above my chamber door."

Element: Preoccupation with the exceptional figure

Why:The raven is on the bust of Pallas (Athena, the goddess of wisdom) because it is wise.

Example 6:"Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,

And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor."

Element: Consuming interest with the monstrous and satanic

Why: The use of the word "ghost" denotes the supernatural and the setting is "bleak," cold, and dark. The narrator is grieving the loss of someone he loved.

Example 7: "Quoth the raven, "Nevermore.""

Element: Emphasis on imagination

Why: The narrator shows heightened imagination by constantly repeating this phrase, even though the raven cannot actually speak.

________________________________________

Example 1: "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary.."

Element: Turning upon the self

Why: This line shows that the tone of the narrator is about to shift.

Example 2: "Deep into the darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting dreaming dreams no mortals ever dared to dream before"

Element: Individual creator

Why: The narrator believes that his dreams are one of a kind and that no one has dreamed them before.

Example 3: "Sent thee respite--respite and nepenthe from thy memories of Lenore! Quaff, of quaff this kind of nepenthe, and forget this lost Lenore!"

Element: Emotion over reason

Why: The narrator is exalting his emotions over reason and believes that the raven was sent by an angel to remind him of his lost love Lenore.

Literary works exhibit a consuming interest in folk culture, national and ethnic cultural origins, and the medieval times and a fascination with the exotic, the remote, the mysterious, the weird, the occult, the monstrous, the diseased, and even the satanic.

The work shows an emphasis on imagination as a gateway to transcendent experience and spiritual truth.
