There is no treatment which can completely relieve you from this disease. They're currently testing a possible treatment which involves enzyme replacement. Most of the time symptoms are treated as they occur and spinal fusion is considered to prevent Spinal Cord Injury.
Morquio Syndrome is an inherited disease of metabolism in which the body is missing a substance that is needed to break down long strains of sugar molecules. The build up of the sugar could damage the organs and cause abnormal development in the bones, knock knees, bell-shaped chest,etc.
What Causes It?
Morquio Syndrome is an autosomal recessive trait. This means that if both parents have the defective trait, the baby has a 25% chance of getting the disease. Their are two forms of Morquio Syndrome, Type A and Type B which both don't let you produce a certain enzyme which are used to break down sugars. The syndrome is estimated to occur in 1 of every 200,000 births. Symptoms usually start at the ages 1 and 3.
