Island Hopping in WW2

Definition

Battle of the Guadalcanal

A military strategy used by the allies in ww2 to conquer the weakest islands in order to get closer to Japan.

The Japanese had a major airbase on this Island which the U.S wanted control of.

In August 1942, the U.S troops came in and tried to seize the airfield.

In February 1943, the U.S succeeded.

Douglas MacArthur came up with the idea of island hopping for the allies to use

This was the first time the U.S began to use Island Hopping

Why

Strategy

In order to get closer to Japan, the U.S gained control of the weaker and smaller Islands that had military bases so they could use them to support their own troops.

The allies would gain control of islands with airstrips so that they could launch bombers.

Where

Douglas MacArthur tried to free the people of the Philippine islands.

He pushed along the New Guinea coast with Austrian allies.

If the plane was damaged in the fight, the airstrips on the islands conquered by the U.S gave the fighter pilot a safe place to land.

Admiral Chester Nimitz crossed the central Pacific by way of the Gilberts, Marshalls, Marianas, Carolines, and Palaus Islands.
