Interesting Facts

The Venus of Willendorf was the first complete sculpture of a woman from the Old Stone Age.

Features

The red ochre covering the sculpture has been thought to symbolize menstrual blood as a life giving agent.

It was created during the same period as several other famous Stone Age statuettes, including the bas-relief Venus of Laussel, the Venus of Dolni Vestonice (Czech Republic), and the Venus of Lespugue (France).

The size of Venus of Willendorf lead archeologists to think that it was used as a lucky charm.

The artist emphasized body parts related to reproduction and nursing.

It is 4 3/8 inches or 11.5 centimeter high.

The enlarged breasts and pelvic region suggest healthy and succesful reproduction.
