The would outline their eyes with kohl (powdered antimony) to make them look bigger and appear more wide. Ladies would use drops of belladonna in their eyes to achieve that bright look in their eyes. Plucked eyebrows was required for a court lady, also known as a highbrow. This type of eyebrow look took serious stage makeup and pain.
For the cheeks and lips, the most popular choice of a court lady to use is vermilion(mercuric sulfide) which is a color that could be laid on thick. Other choices used were madder, cochineal and ocre for blush and lip color.
Pale skin was the desired look of the 1500s and was the sign of wealth. Women would use a mixture of white lead and vinegar called ceruse. They would apply this to their face,neck and bosom. They would also use uncooked egg whites to smooth their skin and hide wrinkles.
Woman have always wanted to enhance their beauty. Appearance was important to many. The ideal Elizabethan female would have bright eyes, pale white skin, red cheeks and lips and fair hair. Most of their makeup was poisonous.
Chains were very popular in the 1500s to 1600s, they were typically made of gold or pearls. The rich would wear several strands of pearls or gold chokers. The middle class would wear more modest necklaces, often emerald.
Jewelery became very popular in the 1600s. Gems usually used consisted of diamond, ruby, emerald, opal, topaz, sapphire, turquoise, carnelian and jasper.
In the late 1500s earnings became fashionable. They were usually small hoops, maybe something else would be hanging off it. Ladies used to wear small ornaments in their hair. The rich's ornaments were made of pearl. The ornaments were also made of gold.
Rings were not the most popular jewelery piece in the 1500s to the 1600s. They were often worn by middle class and nobility. And unlike today rings were worn on people's second joint on the finger, not the third.
Brooches became very popular in the early 1500s. And Pendants became very popular in the late 1500s. Miniature paintings were often worn as pendents and became in style in the 1500s.
