They're still young and will be easily influenced by the community, family and friends around them. It's something that will impact their life so they might be confused and stressed about what they need to do.

Few issues:

SET Plan

Supporting Networks

Subject Selection sets them up for:

  • Goals
  • Career choices
  • Future paths
  • Start thinking

As parents you need to help support their decisions and guide them towards a better tomorrow.

- Useful tool to get students thinking about their subject choices and future and provides opportunities for interaction between the school, parents and students.

- This plan requires students to fill in questions about themselves, interests and feelings regarding certain educational aspects which will help them select the subjects that are right for them and constantly monitor their progress in it over their senior years with close parent and school communication.

3. Be open and share your own experiences with them

4. Be encouraging and positive and NEVER "give up" on them.

A young person’s story (myfuture):

I started skipping class first, then I moved on to graffiti: plastering my tag throughout my suburb and the wider city. I never really focused on my studies, I’m sure everyone thought I’d never actually make anything of myself. Mum and Dad were completely frustrated by my behaviour, but they always stuck by me and encouraged me to ‘find’ myself. Mum, who is very artistic, was the first to realise that art and photography actually captured my attention and provided a way for me to harness my skills and energies. When I was nearing the end of year 10, subject selection time came around, and although I wasnt overly bothered by it, she and Dad both worked to create opportunities for me to know myself better and to see what subjects I could select going into yr 11 and 12 that might help me build a career in art. I took their advice and selected design subjects going into my senior years which I loved so much that I went on to study at University. I’ll finish my fine arts university degree next year. I could finish earlier, but I’m working two jobs this term to keep the money coming in. I’m so grateful Mum and Dad never gave up on me.

1. Encourage them to find out as much as they can about the whole process BUT also be informed yourself!!!

2. Encourage them to choose subjects they are interested in and start to consider where these could take them in their future studies and careers.

"If you support your child to choose subjects they are good at, interested in and can see themselves using in the future, your child is not only more likely to do better in the HSC, but to achieve a higher ATAR"

Funschool subject night! Next week, Wednesday 5pm Main Hall.

- As a parent, you play an important role in helping your child to make appropriate subject choices which will help your child succeed both in school (and further study) and in their future career.

- There is no right and wrong way to help young people with educational planning

- It depends largely on the individuals involved and the most effective way to intervene according to parents understanding of their child and which approach works best for them.

- However, there are some things that generally work quite well when trying to help your child with selecting subjects--> Lets look at a few of these:
