Conclusion

  • The choices you make and the way that you live directly effects the outcome and path of your life
  • Gregor made nothing of his life, therefor no one really noticed or cared too much when he was gone, and it was his own fault.

Existentialism in The Metamorphosis

Grete as a character foil

  • Gregor had several, short-term goals that benefited others
  • Grete had her own aspirations and hobbies such as the violin
  • Gregor had no friends or social life
  • Grete led a normal life and went to school

The meaning of existence is what you choose it to be

  • No real drive and meaning of his own, only for his family

"If I didnt hold back for my parents' sake, I would have quit long ago, I would have marched up to the boss and spoken my peace from the bottom of my heart"(4).

Man has control of his own fate

  • Gregor's death was his choice

Inauthentic Life

"He remembered his family with deep feeling and love. In this business, his own thought that he had to disappear was, if possible, even more decisive than his sister’s... Then without willing it, his head sank all the way down, and from his nostrils flowed weakly out his last breath"(71).

  • Never took control of his life and made something meaningful of it
  • No friends
  • Never made himself matter
  • Lived and died for his family

Thesis

Kafka's Metamorphosis is an example of existentialism and is conveyed through Gregor's inauthentic lifestyle and how the choices he made ultimately led to the condition of his miserable life.

Taryn Ginn

Kendall Kennedy

  • Worked all day then passively gave them all of his money
  • Became insignificant by making himself seen as a means of income instead of an individual person

Destiny is the result of our actions

  • Didn't demand respect or to be seen as an individual by his family

After discovering Gregor dead, Mr. Samsa said "now we can thank God!"(52).
