SMALL SEIZURES

WHAT IS EPILEPSY?

What is a seizure?

  • Effects the whole brain
  • involves a lot of movement
  • convules, shaking, droolings,
  • moaning
  • stiffness
  • biting/chewing
  • change in skin pigments

Occur in only one section of the brain.

Effects certain areas of the body.

*OFTEN NOT NOTICEABLE*

Eye flutters

light twitching in ligaments.

seeming confused.

staring spells.

  • When your brain's electrical messages don't turn off and send confusing messages to your body.
  • There are different kind of seizures for each part of the brain.
  • People with epilepsy have recurring seizures.
  • If someone has more than two seizures they are diagnosed with epilepsy.

STEP TWO

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF SOMEONE WAS HAVING A SEIZURE?

  • BASICS:
  • Time the seizure
  • Alert others around you what is going on.
  • Do NOT hold down or grab the person!
  • When seizure is over reassure the person everything is okay.

  • Take different FIRST AID steps for "BIG" and "SMALL" seizures.

"BIG"

  • RECOGNIZE THE SYMPTOMS

"SMALL"

  • Cushion or protect head
  • Loosen all tight clothing around the neck.
  • Turn to the side
  • NEVER PUT ANYTHING IN THEIR MOUTHS.
  • Don't hold down.
  • Identify what kind of seizure it is.
  • move ALL hazardous objects.
  • guide person away from dangerous areas.
  • stay with them until the seizure is over.
  • Do NOT shout at them.
