Monogamy vs Polygamy

Social Construction

Conclusion

Introduction

Swingers

We use a social constructionist framework that views gender and sexuality as produced, reproduced and transformed in everyday interactions and practices (Zimmerman, 1987)

So what is Monogamy and Polygamy?

Monogamy is defined as 'the practice or state of having a sexual relationship with only one partner'

Polygamy is defined as 'the practice or custom of having more than one partner at the same time'

Social Construction

  • Seidman argues that everything is socially constructed, in order to fit around the economic system
  • Marxist ideas support this as they believe that the capitalist economy helps to shape a specific sexual culture

How are sexual relationships changing in our generation?

"The sexual revolution, delayed first marriage, 'hooking up', and greater acceptance of non-heterosexual practices have complicated sexual rules for young adults, yet the moral importance of monogamy has had tremendous staying power" (Laumann et al, 1994)

Human sexuality

Polyglamorous

Human sexuality is the expression of sexual sensation and related intimacy between human beings. Psychologically, sexuality is the means to express the fullness of love between a man and a woman. Biologically, it is the means through which a child is conceived and the lineage is passed on to the next generation.

Tinder

Tinder can show how human sexuality is changing, as it is an app that allows for people to engage in more casual relations and have a more polyamorous lifestyle.
