1958 Lituya Bay Mega-tsunami

by: Spencer Hill

Suming It All Up

Lituya Bay mega-tsunami was the biggest tsunami so far that was produced by an earthquake, which caused a landslide. This caused the mega-tsunami to form. This will happen again; nobody knows when or how big.

Facts

Classification

This mega-tsunami can be classified in the hydrosphere since it is a wave. It can also be classified as a geological feature that is caused by earthquakes, landslides, and erosion.

beach erosion

landslide

  • The tsunami occured at night on July 9, 1958. Howard and Edric Ulrich were eyewitnesses.

  • There has been four other tsunamis in Lituya Bay.

  • The tsunami wave was about 1720 feet above the bay.

  • The force of the wave uprooted all the trees and vegetation.

I chose this topic because mega-tsunamis have a major fear factor associated with them.

They are very:

* Powerful

* Destructive

* Loud

* Extremly big

and they can:

* Kill you

* Drown you

* Maim you

* Impale you

How Did It Happen?

An earthquake caused a landslide which slid into the Lituya Bay and this caused the mega-tsunami.

The difference between normal wind waves and a tsunami wave.

Location

The rock that dumped 40 million cubic tons into the bay.

The mega-tsunami happened in the United States at Lituya Bay, Alaska in the Gilbert Inlet.
