Education

Career

Scipione del Ferro's education is little well know, however, it is very likely that he attended the University of Bologna.

Scipione later became appointed lecturer in arithmetic and geometry at the same university in 1496. He retained this post as lecturer for the rest of his life. He was also involved in business transactions in the latter part of his life.

Scipione del Ferro was the first mathematician to discover an algebraic method for solving the cubic equation Ax^2 + Bx + C = 0. The solution to the cubic equation would be x = (-B + √(B2-4AC))/2A and x = (-B - √(B2-4AC))/2A

Scipione's work

No writings of Scipione del Ferro have survived mainly due to the fact that he did not make his discoveries widely know, preferring to share them with only a select number of close friends and students. He did, however, keep a notebook in which he recorded his most important discoveries.

Besides his contributions to help solve cubic equations, Scipione del Ferro made important contributions to rationalising fractions and also examined which geometrical problems could be solved with a compass set in a fixed direction.
