A = Mass Number
Mass number, is the number of protons
and neutrons in an atoms nucleus.
Z = Atomic Number
Atomic Number is the number
of protons in an atoms nucleus
and X... doesnt matter.
Actually it does, but not really.
X is the element that we are dealing with.
It can be Helium, Zinc, Iron, whatever.
How many things?,,
well protons in an atom can be
firgured out by the atomic number.
if it is 4, then there are 4 protons!!
And neutrons can be figured out easily as well.
To find out how many neutrons an atom has just
take the mass number, and subtract the atomic number
from it. What ever is left over = neutrons.
But... we forgot about something. Electrons
Since we can only see protons and neutrons with
the notation, how do we figure out electrons?
This is how, back to charge...
Charge... the charge of the atom will be
over top of the element to the right, like
a power.
If there isn't a charge displayed by the element. like...
Then the charge is neutral... so
there are just as many electrons
as there are protons...
6
There are 6!
When there is a charge...
Then you can figure out the # of
electrons easily as well.
if the charge is positive, like 1 2 3 4 5 or any other
number, then there are more protons than electrons...
because protons are positive remember.
sooooo..... if the charge is 2, and the atomic number is 3...
then there are 2 more protons than electrons, since the atomic #
is 3, we know there are 3 protons. 3-2=1, 1 electron!!!
if the charge is negative like -1, -3...
then there are more electrons than protons,
because electrons are negative!
if the atomic number is 5 and the charge is -2...
there are 2 more electrons than protons... so 5 + 2
= 7, there are 7 electrons!!!
