Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach (CALLA)

Theory of Language

Language is:

  • communicative and academic
  • a combination of
  • grammar,
  • discourse,
  • function,
  • sociolinguistics,
  • pragmatics.

Theory of Learning

Learning is:

  • active, dynamic
  • declarative, procedural and metacognitive

Learning Strategies:

  • are metacognitive, cognitive, or social affective
  • can be learned
  • transfer to new tasks
  • make academic lang. learning more effective

Teaching believes:

  • active learners are better learners

Objectives

Assist students in:

  • developing academic language,
  • creating meaningful connections,
  • valuing existing knowledge and experience,
  • developing and using various learning strategies.

Syllabus

Content should:

  • be appropriate for ELL's grade level or pre-existing knowledge,
  • be based on mainstream curriculum,
  • encompass high priority topics,
  • follow the same sequence as mainstream curriculum.
