WHAT IS COMMUNITY-BASED PROTECTION?
QUESTIONS & FEEDBACK
LINK TO INTEGRATED ToC
Community-based protection is a process that puts the capacities, agency, rights and dignity of communities at the centre of programming. It is a systematic and continuous process of engaging communities as analysts, evaluators and implementers in their own protection.
- The presence of COVID-19 in conflict zones raises significant protection concerns. Protection space is diminishing.
- Existing vulnerabilities are likely to be exacerbated
- Vulnerable populations may be neglected, stigmatized, and face discrimination and difficulties in accessing services
- Violence is increasing (GBV, IPV, abuse of power)
- Existing community relationships
- Need to have existing strong relationships with community structures, including representatives of different age, gender and diversity groups
- Staff need to have developed "soft skills" (communication, facilitation, PFA, active listening)
- Cross-sectoral skill sets, can be any staff and not just stand-alone protection teams
- Would this approach work in your CO?
- What components would be easily integrated into existing programming?
- Do you have existing resources that can be applied to implement this approach?
- What guidance would you need to implement this type of programming?
- If project proposals for a COVID-19 response are underway, do you feel CBP is being sufficiently included?
How can this approach be implemented for COVID-19?
- Community contingency & early warning early response planning
- Utilizing the protection risk equation to work with communities on preparing them for COVID-19
- Working with communities to establish/identify positive coping mechanisms to COVID-19

Thank you!
Working with communities to support them in preparing their own contingency plans, with their own mitigation and response strategies

WHAT IS THE PROTECTION RISK EQUATION?
OVERALL OBJECTIVE
To reduce protection risks related to COVID-19 by decreasing community tensions and promoting positive coping mechanisms through targeted participation and engagement of communities and community based [protection] structures
