The Challenge
Arachne was very proud of her work and sometimes very arrogant and thinks that she is the best spinner in all of Greece, even better than Athena.Athena, disguised as an old woman, approaches Arachne and warns her to respect the gods, not defile them. Archne insults the old woman and says that she could probably teach Athena a thing or two about weaving.
Later, Athena, in her true form, approaches Arachne. In a tone of anger, Athena challenges Arachne to a contest that would determine which of them was really the better weaver.
Arachne accepts Athena's challenge. After accepting, Athena states the details of the competition.
If Arachne lost the competition, she was to accept any punishment that Athena saw fit to give her. If she won, then Athena agreed to never use spindle or loom again.
