To Kill a Mockingbird

Chapter 2

Summary

The Cunninghams

Characters Met

The chapter mentions a part where Scout asked Atticus about the Cunninghams. Atticus then goes on to say that they are poor farmers who's financial debt he paid off, and is slowly paid back through crops that they harvest. Scout then ask Atticus if they were poor, and his response was yes, but not as poor as the Cunningham family.

This chapter begins when school is beginning, so that means Dill is going back home. This out's first day of school ever, and already argues with the teacher. Scout tells the teacher that she know how to read, and Miss Caroline says that she is learning the wrong way. Ms. Caroline then tells Scout to tell her farther to stop teaching her, but Scout claims her father didn't teach her to read. The conversation is then dropped, but Scout makes a comment that embarrasses a fellow classmate, Walter Cunningham. It started when Ms. Caroline told the class to take out their lunch, and Walter didn't pull anything out. Ms. Caroline ask Walter if he would like a piece of her sandwich, and to just pay her back tomorrow. The kids in the class began to chatter amongst themselves', to see who was gonna tell Ms. Caroline that Walter's family is to poor to pay her back. Scout then decides to take matters into her own hands and make a big announcement infront of the entire class that Walter is so poor that he can't even afford shoes, let alone pay her back for the sandwich.
